In the run up to the new year, CNN-IBN is taking a look back to the
hottest trends of 2012. So who was the most searched celebrity or which
music video got the maximum views?Katrina Kaif continues to be the queen
of the web while Salman Khan is the top searched male actor. Former
porn star Sunny Leone is one of the hottest trends in the virtual world.
This was revealed by Google after it analysed all the clicks and search
requests made by 130 million Indian Internet users in 2012.
But the results show that Indians are also doing more than just searches of celebrities. They’re now relying more on the web for maps, net-banking and e-commerce. Manager at Google Rajan Anandan says, “What’s interesting in 2012 is the establishment of what we call the utilatarian web where large number of Indians are doing a lot of research about where to go to school, which car as well as transactions, reservations.”
Analysis show that India’s top searched travel sites are makemytrip, cleartrip, and Red bus while the most used shopping websites are Flipkart, Homeshop18, Snapdeal and bookmyshow.Mobile internet trends are changing too. Over 70 million Indians are now using the Internet on their mobiles mainly to access songs and YouTube. What is the most popular music on YouTube? It’s Yo Yo Honey Singh’s desi music.
The content that Indians love tends to be Indian. It’s not surprising at all. If one looks at the Indian Premier League, it has much bigger viewership than Olympics. So the fact that Yo Yo Honey Singh is the top video is not surprising.
‘Seek and ye shall find’ is an old proverb, but now it’s all about ‘Google and ye shall find’ and you can find for sure not just what you are looking for, but also options related to it. With simple tweets, Facebook posts and videos like Gangam style becoming an Internet rage, you never know, one day your online post could become the most searched. So keep Googling.
