Item songs with ‘A’certificate to be barred from small screen

The beats of Bebo’s ‘Fevicol se’ and Katrina’s ‘Sheila Ki Jawani’ must have shaken your legs several times. But the music lovers will no longer be able to enjoy such item numbers on their TV sets as the government has decided to rate them as adult content and ban their telecast on television channels.
The decisions of the Censor Board were conveyed at a meeting called by the Union Home Ministry to get suggestions from all the ministries and departments over women security.
The Central Board of Film Certification has told the government that all its regional offices that are involved in certification of films have been instructed in this regard.
“Such item songs with ‘A’ certification would not be allowed to be telecast on television. However, a maximum of ‘UA’ rated content could be seen on television,” said the Censor Board.
Justifying the move Censor Board CEO Pankaja Thakur said, “The decision is a part of the efforts to check vulgarity and obscenity in television serials and cinema. It must not be linked with the Delhi gang rape incident.”
She further said that the issue was under discussion for quite some time. “The board has received numerous representations from the general public and also from the National Commission for Women recently over the item numbers especially two specific songs”, she said.
“We are not defining item songs. Rather our intention is to separate those songs which are meant for adult consumption, either due to their lyrics or their visuals,” she added.
Meanwhile, the board also announced deletion of songs and scenes in which any kind of direct or indirect violence is shown against women.
Thakur said that the deletions will not be forced on the filmmakers but will be mutual.
